Shopping in the mall I saw all the fun and colorful jewelry for summer and saw the prices! I always keep Jo An Fabric and Michaels coupons in my car for this reason, I need to stop and get some glass beads and cord. Glass beads cost me $3.00 for a bag(a lot of beads!), and leather cord for jewelry $2.00 (it is thin so the beads will fit).
Materials:
Glass beads in various sizes
Leather cord for jewelry, waxed cotton cord, hemp (bead needs to fit on cord)
Scissors
Directions:
For a finished necklace 32″ to 34″ total length, you will at least 3 1/2 yards of cord. The knots take up a lot of cording, so do not cut yourself short by not having enough cord. Cut two pieces of cording the same length (the longer your cording, the longer the finished necklace will be) and cut the cord into two equal pieces (mine are about 62″ each). Tie the first knot about 4” to 6″ down from one end, and slide on your first bead. I like starting with smaller beads, and working the larger beads in the center of the necklace.
Now make another simple knot. If you are using a leather cord do not pull super tight when making the knot, the cord will break.
Here is my trick, slide the next bead onto the opposite cord from the first bead (look can you see it!). Now a knot!
So just check to see which cord the bead ahead is on and use the other cord for next bead. Keep going….bead – knot.
Keep going until it is the length you want (you will need about 4″ to tie to the other side of the necklace).
When your necklace is the length you like, tie the ends (all 4 pieces of cord) together and your necklace is done. I made two necklaces, one just a little longer than the other.
I love all the different colors, sizes and shapes glass beads have, making this a perfect summer necklace. I’m making one for all my special girlfriends.
