Painted Wooden Clothespin Snowman Ornament

These little snowmen will add charm to any Christmas tree or gift box!  They are quick and simple, and make a great project to do with the kids!

Materials:

  • Wooden Doll Pins 3 3/4″ (package of 30, sold in craft stores)
  • Red or Green felt for hat
  • Acrylic paint: white, black, orange, red and or green
  • Clear Gloss Varnish
  • String or ribbon for hanger
  • Thin ribbon (to tie on hat)
  • Paint brush
  • Black Ultra Fine Sharpie
  • Glue (I like hot glue)
  • Scissors
  • Optional: small jingle bell, sequin snowflake, Twinkle Crystal by DecoArt (glitter paint),fine sandpaper, toothpick, Q-tip

Directions:

Paint the wooden pins white (you do not need to paint the top ball part because the hat will cover it). If needed, sand with fine sandpaper; sometimes the sides are rough so just smooth with a little sanding.  It will take 2 or 3 coats of white paint, I have found that an old shoe box works great for a drying rack (you are going to want to make more than one). With black paint make 2 eyes (look at picture below for placement) and with red paint make a simple scarf, one stroke from the right side, one stroke from the left, small circle (knot) then two separate strokes down make tales to the scarf (hope that makes it easy).

Make a carrot nose with orange paint, let dry and add rosy cheeks.  Mix red and white to make a soft pink, I find it easy to use a Q-tip as the brush, just a quick up/down.  My next little trick is to use a fine line Sharpie pen for the smile, just 4 or 5 little lines and lets add some personality by adding 2 little eye brows with the Sharpie (wasn’t that easier than a thin paint brush).  Now for the white in his eyes, looks hard but it’s not, dip the end of a toothpick into white paint and make a little dot in each eye(you might to test out the size on scrap paper first).  After drying, paint with a coat of Crystal Twinkles (glitter paint…I love this stuff!). Let dry and paint with a coat of gloss varnish.

Let finish with the hat, cut a piece of felt 2″ by 3″. Fold up one side of the 2″ side and glue, glue hat on the snowman.  String a small jingle bell on to thin ribbon and tie tight with a knot around top of hat, you may need to cut a little off.

For the hanger, side or glue thin ribbon or string through tied ribbon on hat. Glue a sequin snowflake on hat.  You are finished!

How many of this cuties are you going to make?  They are great for the Christmas tree, and fun tie on to a gift bag or box!
