Rick Rack Flowers

Can you believe these flowers are made from Rick Rack? They are so easy to make!

Materials:

  • Rick Rack (medium)
  • Matching felt
  • Hot Glue or Liquid Stitch Glue
  • Scissors
  • Clothes Pin
  • Optional: Sewing Machine with matching thread

Directions:

To make a 2” flower, cut a 40″ long piece of Rick Rack (I used medium for the white flowers above), fold in half.  Start weaving the two pieces together, use clothes pin to hold the folded end to make it easier to weave.

There are two ways to make these beautiful flowers.  One is to glue and the other is to machine stitch the two pieces of Rick Rack together after woven into one strip.  I would do this if the flowers were going on a t-shirt or tote bag, or anything that would be going through the wash.  This is simple to do, you just sew down the center of the Rick Rack strip.

Or the other way is with glue; hot glue or Liquid Stitch glue (I love this stuff!).  Liquid Stitch is washable, but will take longer to dry than hot glue, so it really depends on what you are going to do the flowers.

Lets start making the flower.  Now that you have your strip 20″, start with the end that is folded and run a little line of glue and start rolling tight to make the center.

Keep wrapping the strip around with a little glue (what ever type you like), it is best to keep the glue on the bottom half of the Rick Rack.  Wrap until you have the size flower you want or you run out of Rick Rack.  When you come close to the end, fold the tail to the back (side that will not be seen) and glue in place.  The top of the flower should look like the one below.

This is the back, with tail glued.  Cut a circle of matching felt and glue to back.

With your fingers, pull back or roll back to outer rows to shape the flowers.  Play around until you get the look you want.

How pretty are these Rick Rack flowers? They are perfect on a headband, clip, tote bag or picture frame.

I used one package of Rick Rack to make all these flowers for about $1.70 (without a coupon) and a frame on sale for $4.00 and used clear adhesive dots to hold the flowers in place. It made a great {and inexpensive}  gift!

These pink flowers I used the jumbo size Rick Rack.  Below I have the medium size white, next to jumbo size pink.

How about putting a magnet on the back? Or a rick rack flower on gift tag or gift bag? These are so versatile!
